How to Plumb Your Home for a Water Softener

  • Place the water softener near to the waterline, before any other plumbing connections except outdoor water pipes.
  • Outdoor faucets should stay on the hard water supply to avoid losing soft water.
  • Need a drain to capture the salty waste and carry it away. You may use a floor drain, laundry tub, sump, standpipe, etc., as allowed by your local plumbing codes.
  • It is important to make sure the backwash drain line is installed with a proper air gap to prevent the backflow of water into the softener.
  • Don’t place the end of the drainage hose in the drain.
  • Avoid connecting water softeners in parallel. A parallel installation will double the water that can be conditioned, but the hardness will not change.
